David Bowie Centre

SCOPE OF WORK:Interpretation strategy and design
Environmental graphics, signage and prints

V&A East Storehouse - London

The David Bowie Centre at the V&A East Storehouse is the new permanent home for the artist's lifetime archive. The challenge was to develop a design language that remains consistent with the overall Storehouse, while bringing a special ‘Bowie’ twist that pays homage to the multifaceted creative legend.

Unlike a typical gallery space, the Centre is an active studying space for the performance arts, offering David Bowie's archive as open resources. A part-permanent, part-rotating exhibition – with displays, a study centre, a learning zone, and a research library.

The solution was a design strategy that aimed for utility in formats, layouts and forms for all graphic outputs, while seeking for opportunities to bring in the David Bowie element through details in materiality and production method.

The design system is centred around a modern monogram that represents the duality of the Milltown Partners approach, where analytical rigour meets creative thinking.

Comprehensive template designs were created for analysis reports and research presentations, a large component of Milltown's professional services.

As part of the project, I conducted several workshops to introduce the graphic system and templates to all levels of the company staff, including the executive board.

The playful design of the monogram can be adapted to create a dynamic typographic set, used for wayfinding and extended assets.
